Two men have been arrested in Raisen after a disturbing video showing them assaulting a disabled relative near a petrol pump went viral on Friday, triggering widespread condemnation. The 37-second clip, filmed by bystanders who failed to intervene, prompted police to take suo motu action.

Video triggers swift police action

The accused have been identified as Rajkumar Lovanshi and Govind Lovanshi, both relatives of the victim. According to police, the three had travelled together to sell paddy and were returning home after consuming alcohol. A dispute reportedly broke out during the journey, escalating into a physical confrontation.

Sub-divisional police officer Sheela Surana confirmed that both accused were arrested on Saturday. “The victim is a relative of the accused. After selling paddy, they consumed alcohol. A quarrel broke out, which led to this shameful act,” she said.

Police officials said the video surfaced online around 4 p.m. on Friday, showing an assault taking place near a petrol pump. Officers immediately initiated action based on the footage and eyewitness accounts.

Bystanders filmed incident but did not intervene

One of the most criticised aspects of the incident was the behaviour of bystanders, several of whom recorded the assault without attempting to stop it. The footage sparked intense debate on social media about public responsibility and the growing trend of filming crimes instead of intervening or alerting authorities.

Police have appealed to citizens to prioritise immediate reporting of such incidents rather than sharing videos online.

Political controversy erupts in Madhya Pradesh

The incident soon turned political, with Opposition leaders targeting the state government over alleged law-and-order lapses. Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari launched a sharp attack on the ruling dispensation, alleging a breakdown of public safety.

Patwari claimed repeated instances of public humiliation were occurring in the state and criticised the functioning of the Home Department. He demanded that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav clarify accountability within the government.

The BJP, however, accused the Opposition of politicising a criminal case, stating that the police acted promptly and the arrests demonstrate a firm response.

Investigation underway

Police are examining the full sequence of events that led to the altercation, including statements from the victim and witnesses. Officers are also verifying whether additional individuals were present or involved. The victim is currently under medical evaluation.

Authorities have reiterated that strong action will be taken against anyone responsible for violence or humiliation, regardless of political or personal connections.

Conclusion

The Raisen incident has once again highlighted concerns over rising public apathy, viral video culture, and political tensions surrounding law-and-order issues in Madhya Pradesh. With arrests made and an investigation underway, police say they are focused on ensuring justice for the victim and preventing similar incidents in the future.
