BENGALURU: A tragic incident in Bengaluru has left residents of the IT city in shock after a specially-abled woman was allegedly sexually assaulted at her home in MR Nagar, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Audugodi Police Station. The incident took place on November 9, when the woman was alone at home.
Accused high on marijuana, caught by locals
According to reports, the accused, identified as Vignesh alias Dadu, attempted to assault the woman, who reportedly has difficulty speaking and walking. He was allegedly under the influence of marijuana when he broke into the house by opening the latch on the main door.
Police said the accused had managed to partially undress the victim before her mother returned from a wedding function. Upon entering the house, the mother found Vignesh hiding behind the door. She immediately raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents.
Local residents rushed to the scene, caught the accused, and beat him up before handing him over to the Audugodi Police. The authorities soon took him into custody and filed a case under Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to offences of sexual harassment and assault.
Police confirm arrest, investigation underway
The accused is currently in police custody as investigations continue. The police are verifying details about Vignesh’s background and the circumstances that led to the crime. They are also investigating how he managed to enter the premises and whether he had been stalking the victim.
The victim’s family has been left traumatised by the incident. Police officials have assured that strict action will be taken and that the case will be fast-tracked, given the nature of the crime and the victim’s vulnerable condition.
Same day as prison ‘VVIP treatment’ controversy
Coincidentally, the incident was reported on the same day that Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara addressed the controversy surrounding “VVIP treatment” of certain inmates at Bengaluru Central Jail. The minister had assured stringent action against jail officials accused of allowing undue privileges to prisoners, including rapists and high-profile criminals.
During his statement to the media, Parameshwara said that he had directed Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) B Dayananda, who currently heads the prisons department, to conduct an inquiry and submit a report.
“We have appointed B Dayananda as the head of prisons. I have told him that such incidents are happening repeatedly. Immediate action should be taken against whoever is responsible, and a report must be submitted,” Parameshwara told ANI.
He further warned officials, saying, “I will not tolerate this nonsense. Enough is enough.”
B Dayananda’s return and recent controversies
After the retirement of DGP (Prisons) Malini Krishnamoorthy, B Dayananda was appointed to the post on July 31, nearly two months after his suspension following the Bengaluru stampede tragedy on June 4. The stampede occurred after Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory, resulting in the death of 11 people and injuries to several others.
Despite the recent administrative reshuffle, the Home Minister made it clear that excuses such as staff shortages will no longer be tolerated. “Complaints like being short-staffed are not acceptable. Officers must perform their duties responsibly,” he emphasised.
City in shock, calls for stricter safety measures
The assault on the specially-abled woman has reignited debates about women’s safety and home security in Bengaluru. Activists have urged authorities to ensure faster police response in residential areas and stronger community vigilance systems, especially to protect vulnerable individuals.
Residents of MR Nagar have expressed anger over the incident and demanded exemplary punishment for the accused. Local women’s groups have also come forward to support the victim’s family and called for stricter enforcement of laws against sexual assault.
Conclusion
The Bengaluru assault case serves as a grim reminder of the persistent safety challenges faced by women and vulnerable groups, even in urban areas. As the police proceed with their investigation, the city hopes that justice will be swift and the accused will face the full force of the law.
