In a tragic incident near Khatamba village on Sunday evening, two labourers lost their lives due to suspected asphyxiation after entering a drainage pipeline allegedly without protective equipment.
The deceased have been identified as Akshay Bhahbhor and Vipul Mangroliya. The incident occurred during ongoing pipeline-laying work in the area.
Entered choked pipeline without safety protection
According to Varnama police, one of the labourers noticed that the drainage line was choked. In an attempt to clear the blockage, the two men entered the pipeline without wearing essential safety gear such as protective clothing, face masks, oxygen support or gloves.
When they did not emerge for a prolonged period, co-workers at the site inspected the pipeline and found both men lying unconscious inside after reportedly inhaling toxic gases.
They were immediately pulled out and rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.
FIR filed against contractors
Following the incident, Varnama police registered an FIR against contractor Jayanti Patel, who had been awarded the pipeline-laying contract, and another contractor, Sanjay Khunt.
A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been filed against them. Police officials stated that investigations are underway to ascertain whether mandatory safety protocols were ignored at the worksite.
The incident once again raises serious concerns over labour safety standards at construction and drainage sites. Authorities have reiterated that strict adherence to safety measures, especially in confined spaces like pipelines and manholes, is essential to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
