Two youths were arrested late Wednesday night for allegedly assaulting and threatening a group of youngsters with a revolver following a minor road altercation near Cyber Hub in DLF Phase 2, police said.
The accused have been identified as Sonu (21), an LLB student, and Abhishek (24). Both are residents of Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred around midnight on December 31–January 1 near Shankar Chowk, close to the popular nightlife hub.
Altercation over vehicle brushing incident
According to the complaint, the victim and his friends were travelling from Delhi to Cyber Hub to celebrate the New Year when another vehicle allegedly brushed against the side mirror of their car.
An argument reportedly broke out between the two groups. During the confrontation, the driver of the other vehicle and his associate allegedly pulled out a revolver and threatened the youngsters.
The complainant told police that the accused claimed there were four bullets in the weapon and warned that they would open fire if the argument continued.
Revolver snatched by victims
Sensing imminent danger, the complainant said that his friends managed to overpower the accused and snatch the revolver from them. The situation created panic in the area, which was crowded due to New Year celebrations.
Shortly after, the police control room received an alert about a man brandishing a firearm and threatening people near the main gate of Cyber Hub.
Police reach spot, make arrests
A police team immediately rushed to the location and found the complainant and his friends present. After preliminary questioning and verification of facts, the police took Sonu and Abhishek into custody.
Officers confirmed that the revolver involved in the incident was recovered and seized for further examination. Police are also verifying whether the weapon was licensed.
Case registered, probe underway
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the law for criminal intimidation, assault and offences related to arms possession. Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and determine whether the firearm was used in any previous offences.
Police officials said strict action would be taken, especially considering the incident occurred in a crowded public area during New Year celebrations, posing serious risk to public safety.
The incident has once again raised concerns about road rage and the easy availability of illegal firearms, particularly in high-footfall entertainment zones.
