New Delhi: A profound tragedy has struck the city of Udaipur as siblings Shubh Modi and Shagun Modi lost their lives in the devastating Air India crash near Ahmedabad on Thursday. The young brother-sister duo, children of well-known marble businessman Sanjeev Modi, were on their way to London for a holiday that turned into a nightmare.
The siblings had looked forward to a peaceful vacation abroad. Shubh had earned his B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from the UK, while Shagun recently completed her BA-BBA degree from PDEU, Gandhinagar.
“It’s an unimaginable loss,” said their relative Satish Bhandari, speaking to IANS. “They were young and full of life. No one imagined this would be their final journey.” He recalled receiving the shocking news from the siblings’ grandmother, who had seen the reports on television. “We’re numb… still trying to process it,” he added.
The Air India flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner headed to London, crashed moments after takeoff, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. The lone survivor remains in critical condition. The plane also struck a residential area, causing further casualties on the ground.
Authorities have confirmed that the pilots issued a ‘Mayday’ distress signal shortly after takeoff but lost contact with Air Traffic Control moments later. Investigators are now focusing on recovering the aircraft’s black box, which is expected to reveal vital data about what went wrong.
The nation mourns this loss as grieving families seek answers and justice.
