An undertrial prisoner lodged in the district jail here died on Friday while undergoing treatment at a government medical college, jail authorities confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as Vinod Kumar Shukla (42), a resident of Shukulpur village under the Antu police station limits. He had been lodged in the district jail as an undertrial since October 23, 2023, in connection with a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, allegedly involving the death of his father.
Complaint of chest pain led to hospital referral
District Jail Superintendent Rishabh Dwivedi said Shukla complained of severe chest pain on Friday morning. He was initially examined and treated by the jail doctor. However, when his condition did not improve, prison authorities decided to refer him to a medical college for advanced treatment.
Shukla was taken to the hospital by ambulance under police escort, following standard procedure.
Death reported during treatment
Later, jail warder Vikas Yadav informed jail officials over the phone that Shukla had died while undergoing treatment at the medical college. The exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem examination, officials said.
Family informed, post-mortem ordered
Prison authorities stated that the deceased’s family members have been informed about the incident. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the medical cause of death and rule out any other factors.
Officials added that all procedures were followed promptly after the inmate reported health issues, and necessary records related to his treatment are being maintained.
Further steps, if required, will be taken based on the post-mortem report and medical findings.
