Unity at Sea: Indian, Pakistani Coast Guards Rescue 12 Fishermen
In a remarkable display of maritime cooperation, the Indian and Pakistani Coast Guards joined forces to rescue 12 Indian fishermen after their vessel sank in the North Arabian Sea. Pakistan deployed an aircraft to assist in the operation.
The mechanized sailing vessel Al Piranpir, en route from Porbandar to Bandar Abbas, Iran, capsized on December 4 due to severe weather and flooding. The crew managed to abandon the vessel, seeking safety in a small dinghy.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) reported that the mission showcased seamless coordination between India’s and Pakistan’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCCs), which maintained constant communication throughout. The fishermen were found approximately 270 km west of Dwarka, within Pakistan’s rescue jurisdiction.
Promptly after receiving a distress signal, ICG’s MRCC in Mumbai notified its regional headquarters in Gandhinagar. The patrol vessel ICGS Sarthak was immediately redirected to the area, while Pakistan’s Maritime Security Agency (MSA) alerted ships nearby and dispatched an aircraft to support the search.
A merchant vessel, MV Cosco Glory, also contributed to the operation. After an exhaustive search, the stranded fishermen were successfully rescued and assessed by Sarthak’s medical team, who found them to be in good health.
The fishermen are now en route to Porbandar, Gujarat. This mission underscores the unwavering commitment of both nations to saving lives at sea.
