In a shocking case of alleged medical negligence, police in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar district have arrested a Class 12 student and a graduate for allegedly performing a caesarean surgery at an unregistered private hospital, leading to the death of a woman during childbirth.
The accused have been identified as Yogesh Verma (32), a BA graduate from Malipur, and Shubham Vishwakarma (19), an intermediate student from Sultanpur. The duo allegedly conducted surgeries at Navjeevan Hospital in Baskhari without recognised medical qualifications.
Woman dies after post-surgery complications
The deceased, Priyanka, was admitted to the hospital on February 5 for delivery. According to police, the two accused performed a caesarean section, after which she delivered a baby girl.
However, Priyanka reportedly suffered excessive bleeding after the surgery and did not regain consciousness. As her condition worsened, she was referred to Lucknow for advanced treatment, where she later died.
Enraged family members staged protests outside the hospital following the incident. The hospital operator, identified as Ruby, fled the premises and remains absconding.
Illegal surgeries for years
Police revealed that Yogesh Verma had reportedly learned basic medical procedures while assisting his father, who worked as a ward boy at a Community Health Centre in Jalalpur. Despite lacking formal training, he allegedly performed surgeries for several years.
Shubham Vishwakarma is said to be associated with a nursing home in Sultanpur district. Both men allegedly conducted operations on call and charged between ₹3,000 and ₹5,000 per caesarean — significantly lower than qualified surgeons — attracting economically vulnerable patients.
An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Police are investigating whether the accused carried out similar procedures at other facilities.
The incident has raised serious concerns over the functioning of unregistered hospitals and the safety of patients seeking affordable healthcare.
