US urges de-escalation amid India-Pakistan tensions following Kashmir attack
The United States has called on both India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions following the deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which left 26 civilians dead. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached out to Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reaffirming the US’s commitment to working with India in countering terrorism. He also urged Pakistan’s cooperation in investigating the “unconscionable” attack in Kashmir.
Despite diplomatic efforts, the situation remains volatile as ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) continue for the seventh consecutive day. In response to escalating tensions, India has implemented further measures, including shutting its airspace to all Pakistani-owned and operated aircraft. Additionally, India has blocked the social media accounts of prominent Pakistani actors.
At a time of rising tensions, Pakistan has appointed Lieutenant General Asim Malik, the head of its Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), as the country’s new National Security Adviser. This move adds a layer of complexity to the already strained relations between the two nations.
