NEW DELHI: US Vice President JD Vance is set to land in India on Monday for his maiden visit, accompanied by his Indian-origin wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, and their three children. The Vance family will spend four days in the country.

The visit comes at a tense moment in US-India trade relations, following President Donald Trump’s imposition of a steep 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian exports — part of a larger global tariff package. While the timing is sensitive, the White House has framed the trip as a diplomatic opportunity.

In a statement, it noted: “Vice President J D Vance and the Second Family will travel to Italy and India from April 18 to 24. The VP will discuss shared economic and geopolitical priorities with leaders in each country.”

Upon arrival in Delhi, the Vances will be received by a senior Union minister. While official meetings are expected to focus on trade, regional security, and strategic alignment in the Indo-Pacific, the personal nature of the visit — with the entire Second Family in tow — adds a softer diplomatic touch.

Usha Vance, whose roots trace back to Andhra Pradesh, has previously spoken about her connection to Indian culture. Her presence, along with the couple’s children, is likely to resonate well in cultural and political circles during the visit.
