Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh : A man aged 62 met a tragic end, reportedly at the hands of his cousin, under suspicion of engaging in occult activities aimed at harming him, as per police reports on Sunday.
The incident unfolded in Bharhki village during Saturday afternoon. Indrajit Pathak, who had physical disabilities, was bathing near a hand pump outside his residence when his cousin Mahendra Nath Pathak, aged 54, approached and assaulted him with a thick wooden object, authorities stated.
Indrajit sustained severe injuries from the repeated blows, leading to profuse bleeding. Upon hearing the disturbance, his daughter Aanchal, also with physical challenges, emerged, but Mahendra fled the scene, according to police sources.
Superintendent of Police Meenakshi Katyayan mentioned that villagers and law enforcement promptly transported Indrajit to the district hospital. Subsequently, he was transferred to a trauma center in Varanasi, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
During questioning, Mahendra informed the authorities that he believed Indrajit was involved in occult practices and harbored intentions of harming him. Allegedly, around 14 years ago, Indrajit had performed certain rituals (‘tantra’) on Mahendra’s son, resulting in his demise. Despite Mahendra’s warnings to cease such activities, Indrajit persisted, leading Mahendra to take drastic action, as per the SP’s statement.
Following a complaint lodged by Aanchal, authorities have filed a case against Mahendra under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. Mahendra has been apprehended by the police, pending further legal proceedings.
