Significant measures have been revealed by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) to improve student welfare programs that center on mental health and wellbeing within the school community. IIT Kanpur, in partnership with experts from the Suicide Prevention India Foundation (SPIF), conducted “Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training” as one of the efforts.
110 people were chosen to participate in the training, which took place on March 13 and 14. These people included students, faculty, staff, hall managers, physicians, nurses, and security officers. The purpose of this program was to provide community members with the necessary abilities to assist others in times of need.
Through this training, the experts highlighted the importance of identifying warning signs, intervening effectively, and connecting individuals with necessary resources. The training sessions, featuring interactive workshops and practical exercises, providing participants with valuable insights into suicide prevention strategies and the significance of offering empathetic support.
“IIT Kanpur is committed to promote a supportive, inclusive, and academically empowering environment that prioritizes the mental and emotional well-being of every individual in the institute community. By emphasizing mental health initiatives such as the Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training, IIT Kanpur is nurturing a compassionate community where every individual feels valued and empowered to seek help when needed,” an official statement from IIT Kanpur stated.
The Kota government held a similar program in February and provided free training for the mess staff, warden, director, manager, guard, and employees working in each of the city’s hostels. Recently, a number of IITs and other officials have been holding mental health meetings with students to make sure they can talk about their issues and feel at ease before taking competitive and board exams like JEE and NEET.
