Uttarkashi: An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted Uttarakhand at around 7.30 pm on Saturday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake’s epicentre was in Uttarkashi district, at a depth of 11 kilometres.

No damage was reported immediately after the tremor, according to the NCS. Further details about the areas where the earthquake was felt were not immediately available.

Earthquake recorded at a depth of 11 km

The NCS reported that the earthquake occurred at around 7.30 pm, with its epicentre located in Uttarkashi. The recorded depth of 11 km indicates that the tremor originated relatively close to the Earth’s surface.

The impact of an earthquake depends on several factors, including its magnitude, depth, distance from populated areas and the strength of local buildings. Even moderate earthquakes can be felt over a wide area, depending on these conditions.

Authorities had not reported any damage following the tremor in the initial information released.

Uttarakhand lies in a seismically active region

Uttarakhand is situated in the Himalayan region, which is vulnerable to earthquakes because of the ongoing movement of tectonic plates.

The Indian plate continues to move northwards and interact with the Eurasian plate, creating stress along the Himalayan belt. The release of this accumulated stress can cause earthquakes of varying magnitudes.

Uttarkashi has experienced significant seismic activity in the past. The region was struck by a devastating earthquake in 1991, which caused widespread damage and loss of life.

Residents advised to remain alert

Following an earthquake, residents are advised to remain alert for possible aftershocks and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

People inside buildings during tremors should take cover under sturdy furniture, protect their heads and necks, and stay away from windows and objects that could fall. Once the shaking stops, they should check for visible damage and move to a safe open area if the building appears unsafe.

The latest tremor was reported without immediate damage. Authorities and monitoring agencies may provide further information if additional details emerge.
