In a significant step towards improving maternal healthcare, Uttarakhand has launched a free helicopter service to transport pregnant women from remote and inaccessible areas to hospitals.

First beneficiary airlifted

The service was put into action on Wednesday when a pregnant woman, identified as Udina, was airlifted from Jakholi to the district hospital in Rudraprayag.

Officials said the initiative ensured she could receive proper medical supervision for a safe delivery.

Focus on remote and inaccessible regions

The helicopter service is specifically designed for pregnant women living in areas with poor road connectivity or difficult terrain, where reaching hospitals in time can be challenging.

Authorities highlighted that delays in transportation often pose serious risks during childbirth in such regions.

Free service for expectant mothers

Officials confirmed that the service will be provided free of cost, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent access to emergency maternal care.

The move is expected to benefit women in hilly and remote parts of the district.

Boost to maternal and infant health

District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said the initiative would play a crucial role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates.

He added that timely access to healthcare facilities is key to ensuring safe motherhood and preventing complications during delivery.

A step towards inclusive healthcare

The initiative reflects efforts to bridge healthcare gaps in mountainous regions, where geography often limits access to essential services.

Authorities believe the programme will significantly improve emergency response for pregnant women and strengthen rural healthcare infrastructure.
