Dehradun: The Uttarakhand Assembly unanimously approved the Uniform Civil Code Bill on Wednesday, paving the way for potential replication in other BJP-governed states.
Introduced and subsequently passed by voice vote in the BJP-majority assembly, the opposition had initially proposed sending the Bill to a select committee for further review.
Upon receiving the governor’s consent, Uttarakhand will make history as the first state post-independence to implement a unified law governing marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance, regardless of religious affiliation.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized the significance of the legislation, asserting that it transcends ordinary laws. He highlighted that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) aims to establish parity between genders across all faiths, fostering a non-partisan and non-discriminatory society. Dhami stressed its pivotal role in safeguarding women’s rights and curbing exploitation.
The chief minister underscored the fulfillment of a pre-election pledge to the state’s populace in the lead-up to the 2022 assembly polls. He characterized the enactment as a modest yet crucial step by Uttarakhand towards advancing India’s development agenda under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
