A tragic incident was reported from Chatroo area of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir, where a 16-year-old boy lost his life after his father’s firearm accidentally discharged at their home late on Saturday night.

The deceased, Anuj Kumar, was a Class XI student and the son of a Village Defence Guard (VDG). Police said the incident occurred when his father, Piary Lal, was cleaning his service weapon at their residence in Loidhar village.

Accidental firing during weapon cleaning

According to preliminary information shared by the police, the firearm went off inadvertently while being cleaned, and a bullet struck the teenager. Anuj Kumar sustained critical injuries and died on the spot before any medical help could be provided.

Following the incident, a police team from Jammu and Kashmir Police rushed to the spot. The weapon involved in the firing was seized, and the body was shifted to a nearby hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police begin inquest proceedings

Police officials confirmed that inquest proceedings have been initiated to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accidental firing. Statements from family members and others present at the time are being recorded as part of the investigation.

“After completion of the post-mortem and other legal formalities, the body was handed over to the family for last rites,” a police officer said.

The incident took place in Kishtwar district, a hilly and sensitive region where Village Defence Guards assist security forces in maintaining vigil and local safety.

Concerns over firearm safety

The death has triggered grief and shock in the local community and has once again raised concerns about firearm handling and safety within residential settings, especially where service weapons are kept at home.

Authorities said further investigation is underway, and necessary action will be taken based on the findings.
