Veteran Kannada actor and comedian Raju Talikote passed away on Monday at Manipal Hospital in Udupi. According to reports, the 64-year-old actor, who had been battling age-related health issues, succumbed to a heart attack late on Sunday night.
Born as Rajesaba Maktumasaab Talikoti, Raju hailed from Chikkasindagi village in Sindagi taluk of Vijayapura district. Known for his trademark drunkard characters and comic timing, he was a beloved figure in Karnataka’s film and theatre industry.
Shooting hours before his demise
Reports state that the actor had been shooting for his upcoming film, which also stars Shine Shetty, until 6 p.m. on Sunday. Later that night, around midnight, he reportedly suffered a massive cardiac arrest at his residence. He was immediately rushed to Manipal Hospital, but despite efforts to revive him, he could not be saved.
Shine Shetty, who was present during the shoot, told reporters that Raju had been struggling to breathe before being taken to the hospital. “He was being treated but passed away today. He had participated in the shooting of our film for two days. The movie has not been titled yet,” Shetty said.
Battling health complications
Family sources revealed that Raju had suffered a cardiac episode earlier as well, for which a stent had been inserted. His son shared that the actor had been under medical supervision for some time, but mounting stress may have worsened his condition.
The actor’s last rites will be performed in Vijayapura, his hometown, where family, friends, and fans are expected to pay their final respects.
A legacy in film and theatre
Raju Talikote’s acting journey began in theatre before he transitioned to films. He owned the Khasgateshwar Drama Board in Talikoti, a troupe that earned regional acclaim for staging socially relevant plays across North Karnataka.
Over the years, Raju appeared in several popular Kannada films, including Manasare, Pancharangi, Life Ishtene, Rajdhani, Alemari, Maina, and Topiwala. He also gained household recognition through his stint in ‘Bigg Boss Kannada Season 7’, where his humour and simplicity struck a chord with viewers.
In addition to his movie career, Raju featured in numerous television serials and comedy shows, often portraying rustic, relatable characters that reflected his roots. His effortless comic timing and down-to-earth persona earned him admiration across generations.
Industry mourns his loss
Tributes have poured in from across the Kannada film fraternity. Actors, directors, and co-artists described him as a humble, hardworking, and spirited performer who remained deeply connected to his craft till his final days.
The Kannada theatre community also expressed grief, remembering Raju’s contributions to keeping stage art alive in smaller towns and villages. His passing marks the end of an era for regional comedy and theatre in Karnataka.
