Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film ‘12th Fail’ won two National Awards at the 71st National Film Awards 2025 during a ceremony in New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards.
Best Feature Film and heartfelt tribute
Chopra received the Best Feature Film award for 12th Fail. Speaking to ANI, he said:
“I believe officers like Manoj Sharma are the reason why a lot of people get National Awards. There should be more officers like him.”
The film, adapted from Anurag Pathak’s book, stars Vikrant Massey as Manoj Sharma, with Medha Shankr portraying Shraddha Joshi, a fellow UPSC aspirant who supports him through his journey.
Story of grit and determination
Released on October 27, 2023, the film narrates a tale of failure, perseverance, and determination, resonating with audiences nationwide. It became a surprise box-office success, reflecting the public’s appreciation for inspiring, real-life stories.
Chopra’s wife, Anupama Chopra, shared a heartfelt note on Instagram, recalling the emotional moment of meeting BJP veteran L.K. Advani after the win. She highlighted that Chopra’s first National Award in 1977 for his FTII diploma film Murder at Monkey Hill was also presented by Advani, making this a full-circle moment nearly five decades later.

12th Fail also features Anant Joshi, Anshumaan Pushkar, and Priyanshu Chatterjee, with the screenplay co-written by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Jaskunwar Kohli. The film’s authentic depiction of the challenges faced by UPSC aspirants has been widely praised.
