Vijay Demands SIT for Impartial Probe into Vengaivayal Water Contamination Case
Tamil actor-politician Vijay has called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), supervised directly by the Madras High Court, to reinvestigate the December 2022 water tank contamination case in Vengaivayal, Pudukottai district. This case has drawn widespread attention after excreta was found in a water tank that supplied water to Adi Dravidar families in the region, causing illness among children, some of whom were hospitalized.
In a tweet, Vijay expressed his dissatisfaction with the investigation conducted by the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID), criticizing the delays and inefficiency in the probe. The police recently filed charges against three Dalit men, claiming the incident was an act of revenge.
Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhaga (TVK) party, emphasized the need for an SIT to ensure a thorough, impartial investigation. “If the results of an investigation are in doubt, there is no harm in re-investigating,” he said. He stressed that the real culprits should be identified and held accountable, and the victims must receive justice.
Pointing out the two-year delay in the CB-CID’s report submission, Vijay also warned that if a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry was ordered, it would only cause further delays. He argued that only a swift and unbiased SIT investigation could deliver timely justice to the people affected by the tragedy.
