An emotional audio clip circulating widely on social media has once again brought attention to the case of Sarabjeet Kaur, an Indian woman who travelled to Pakistan for a Sikh pilgrimage in November last year and later married a Pakistani national after converting to Islam.

Viral audio raises alarm

In the unauthenticated clip, Kaur is purportedly heard speaking to her former husband in India, pleading to be brought back home. She claims she is being harassed in Pakistan and says she cannot live without her children. The authenticity of the audio has not been independently verified by authorities.

Pilgrimage and disappearance

The 48-year-old, a resident of Amanipur village in Punjab’s Kapurthala district, was among around 2,000 Sikh pilgrims who crossed into Pakistan via the Wagah border in November to attend birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak. While the rest of the pilgrims returned, Kaur stayed back and was later reported missing.

Pakistani police subsequently stated that she married Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura district near Lahore, a day after arriving in Pakistan on November 4.

Legal twists and detention

Following their marriage, the couple approached the Lahore High Court, alleging police harassment. The court ordered police to stop interfering. However, despite the order, Kaur was later detained and sent to Darul Aman, a government-run shelter home in Lahore, according to official sources.

Authorities reportedly attempted to deport her, but the move was stalled due to the closure of the Wagah–Attari border. Her husband is currently in police custody.

Conflicting claims

Earlier video statements from Kaur suggested she willingly married Hussain and applied for visa extension and Pakistani nationality. However, the latest viral audio paints a contrasting picture, alleging harassment and coercion, and claiming she travelled to Pakistan to retrieve private photos.

The case continues to draw attention in both countries, with officials yet to verify the audio or clarify her future course.
