For millions of students across India, securing admission to an Indian Institute of Technology is the ultimate academic dream. Years of intense preparation go into cracking the JEE, but what life looks like after entering an IIT is rarely discussed. A recent viral video from a boys’ hostel at IIT Bombay has now brought that reality into public focus
Cramped room surprises social media
The video, shared on Instagram by user ca.vaibhavjain, shows a small hostel room cluttered with books, delivery parcels, empty bottles and personal items tucked under the bed. The modest setting surprised many viewers who associate IITs with prestige and multi-crore placement packages.
Soon after going viral, the clip triggered a wave of reactions ranging from humour to disbelief. Several users questioned how students manage in such limited space, especially given the high expectations linked to an IIT education.
‘Success doesn’t begin with luxury’
In his caption, the creator explained that he had visited IIT Bombay as a guest speaker for a finance workshop during the institute’s Tech Fest. Instead of staying at the guest house, he chose to live with students in their hostel.
“Even students who later get ₹2 crore packages live very simply,” he wrote, adding that the experience reinforced the idea that success begins with discipline, not comfort.
Reality of hostel life
Students and alumni say such conditions are common across Indian Institutes of Technology. Hostel rooms are basic, designed to meet essential needs while keeping costs low. Education experts note that while entrance exams and placements dominate public attention, the years in between involve adjustment, resilience and simple living.
While some criticised the clutter, others defended hostel life, saying it teaches independence and focus. The viral clip has opened a rare window into everyday IIT life—where ambition coexists with modest living and long study hours.
