Viral Video Misleads: Kerala Road Accident Falsely Framed as Communal Attack
A surveillance video showing a burqa-wearing woman and child being struck by a car has gained viral traction online, with claims that the woman was deliberately targeted due to her faith. Posts by users like @Th_LebanonTimes and @voiceofhumans01 allege anti-Muslim hate, comparing the incident to violations in conflict zones and racking up over half a million views collectively.
However, a fact-check by Alt News reveals a different story. The victim, Badhariya, was returning from an anganwadi centre in Kottakkal, Kerala, with her son when she was accidentally hit by a vehicle on April 26. According to Mathrubhumi, the driver stopped immediately, and passengers exited to help the injured woman, showing no sign of malicious intent or attempted escape.
Further investigation by Alt News, including a review of the FIR, confirms that the driver, Mohammed Sanoop, is also a Muslim. The FIR states that the accident was caused by negligent driving as the driver reportedly dozed off, and categorically rules out any communal motive. Badhariya sustained non-fatal injuries and is currently recovering.
Despite this, the video continues to circulate with misleading narratives that falsely suggest a hate crime, contributing to communal disharmony and misinformation. Social media users are urged to verify facts before spreading such sensitive content, as false communal claims can dangerously escalate tensions.
