Video triggers debate on police conduct
A viral video from Gujarat’s Anand district has fuelled allegations of misconduct against the police, after it appeared to show an accused man feigning injury following a conversation with an officer.
The Free Press Journal could not independently verify the authenticity of the clip, but it has been widely shared across social media platforms, sparking heated debate and criticism of the police force.
The footage shows multiple police officers escorting a man in a white t-shirt outside a jail cell. Initially, the accused is seen walking normally. However, after re-entering the cell briefly with one officer, who appears to whisper in his ear, he emerges limping and requiring the support of two policemen.
Netizens have accused the police of “coaching” the prisoner to fake an injury, possibly to gain sympathy during his court appearances. The video’s circulation has added another layer of scrutiny to an already disturbing case.
Crime behind the viral clip
According to a News18 report, the man in the video has been detained in connection with the brutal sexual abuse and killing of a five-year-old girl from Anklav taluka in Anand district.
Investigators said the married accused, who was known to the victim’s family, lured the child away before assaulting her and dumping her body in the Mini river near Vadodara.
A Times of India report stated that the accused had confessed to the crime. CCTV footage allegedly corroborated his movements, showing him leaving the village on a motorcycle with the young girl.
The horrific case has shocked the local community and sparked demands for swift justice.
Villagers allege black magic ritual
In the aftermath of the incident, several villagers claimed that the accused carried out a tantrik ritual on the girl before his wife’s baby shower. They alleged that the act was linked to a superstitious belief that it would ensure the birth of a son.
However, the police have dismissed these allegations, stating there was no evidence to support them.
Police response to allegations
Superintendent of Police Gaurav Jasani, speaking to News18, clarified the official stance of the investigation.
“Neither the girl’s family has made any allegation of tantric ritual nor have we found any such evidence in the investigation. This is a clear case of sexual abuse,” he said.
Jasani’s statement, however, has done little to quell speculation about the viral video, which continues to circulate online with claims of police manipulation.
Public reaction and growing distrust
The video has amplified existing public frustration regarding law enforcement practices in Gujarat. Many social media users have questioned whether such “coaching” tactics are used to influence legal proceedings or to alter the public perception of the accused.
Civil rights activists say the incident highlights the urgent need for greater transparency in police investigations and custodial procedures.
“The people are already traumatised by the brutality of the crime. Now, when such videos surface, it undermines faith in the system. Authorities must investigate and clarify what really happened,” said one activist.
The road ahead
The alleged crime itself has already triggered calls for tougher measures against sexual offences and greater child safety in rural areas. Now, with the video drawing national attention, the police face added pressure to demonstrate accountability.
While the Gujarat police have not issued an official statement regarding the viral clip, legal experts point out that any attempt to influence the accused’s conduct during custody could seriously impact the integrity of the case.
As the investigation progresses, the focus will remain on ensuring justice for the young victim while addressing the concerns raised by the viral video.
