A shocking incident unfolded in Wagholi on Tuesday morning when a 29-year-old woman allegedly stabbed her 11-year-old son to death and attempted to kill her 13-year-old daughter following an argument with her husband. The incident occurred at the family’s rented accommodation on BAIF Road, sending shockwaves through the residential society.
Police have arrested the accused, identified as Soni Santosh Jaybhay, who works at a departmental store. She has been booked on charges of murder and attempted murder.
Argument escalates into deadly violence
According to the Wagholi police, the incident took place around 9 am, shortly after Soni’s husband, Santosh, a casual labourer, left the house in search of work. Senior Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar said the couple had argued earlier over multiple issues, including Santosh’s unemployment and alleged drinking habits.
“After her husband left, the woman allegedly picked up a knife from the kitchen, stabbed her son Sairaj and slit his throat,” Inspector Kumbhar said. The boy died due to excessive bleeding.
Daughter escapes, raises alarm
The accused then turned on her daughter, Dhanashree, and attacked her with the same weapon. The girl managed to escape and ran out of the house screaming for help. Alerted by her cries, residents of the society gathered outside the flat and immediately informed the police.
“When people assembled, the woman locked herself inside the bathroom. Our team persuaded her to open the door,” the officer said.
Both children were rushed to a hospital in Wagholi, where Sairaj was declared dead on arrival. Dhanashree is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be out of danger.
Family background and probe
Police said the family, originally from Nanded district, had been living in Pune for nearly a decade and had moved into the Wagholi house just eight days ago. The couple reportedly shifted residences frequently due to ongoing domestic issues linked to the husband’s alcoholism.
Both children were students of a Zilla Parishad school. Further investigation is underway.
