Water, water everywhere but not a drop for farming, say Udhampur ryots

Jammu and Kashmir: The irony in our country is that in some parts, due to less rainfall and limited water reserves farmers do not reap as much as they sow and some of them even resort to suicide. But there are some areas in the country where the water is found in abundance, but are not useful for farming. Similar is the situation of farmers in Udhampur.

Irrigation and farming has become a major issue for the farmers living in the mountains, the reason being the lack of infrastructure. Due to this, the people living in this region are not able to access water directly to their fields.

According to reports in one of the Indian news agencies, around 500 farmers of Nallah Ghoran village say that their village is facing the worst crisis.

The local farmers accuse the state irrigation department of not taking care of the issue and consider it non-existent.

Speaking to the news agency, a farmer named Madan Lal said that the issue was not about water but a canal to divert the flowing water directly into the farm lands. He too blames the irrigation department for its apathy.

This is also the opinion of the Sarpanch of Nallah Ghoran Panchayat, Chander Kant. He said that even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about upliftment and creating a better environment for farmers, it was the department that was working against it.

According to him, if the water sources are properly channelised through the canals, around 600 farmers would benefit.
