On February 23, 2025, what was supposed to be a beautiful union between a groom from Amritsar and his bride-to-be turned into a full-blown conflict that led to the marriage being called off, all because of a bridal lehenga.
The drama began when the groom’s family arrived in Panipat with their baraat, expecting the wedding to proceed smoothly. However, tensions flared when the bride’s family objected to the lehenga brought by the groom’s side, insisting that she wear the one they had bought from Chandni Chowk for ₹40,000. What seemed like a minor disagreement over the bride’s outfit quickly escalated when both families began trading accusations and tempers flared.
According to an interview with ETV Bharat, the groom’s family claimed that the bride’s side had originally requested a lehenga worth ₹20,000 but then changed their demands, asking for a more expensive one. They also alleged that the bride’s family pressured them into the marriage and made unreasonable demands for costly gifts.
On the other hand, the bride’s mother, a widow struggling financially, accused the groom’s family of not providing even basic wedding essentials, including garlands, and for bringing artificial jewelry instead of gold. The situation worsened when a guest reportedly pulled out a sword, escalating the conflict to a violent level. The police had to step in to restore order, but by then, the damage was done—the wedding was called off.
What should have been a joyous celebration quickly turned into a cautionary tale of how something as simple as a bridal lehenga can lead to a breakdown in relations. While weddings in India are filled with emotion, tradition, and grandeur, this incident highlights the immense pressures that come with these celebrations.
