Viral videos showing a senior female professor “marrying” a student in a classroom at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) in West Bengal have sparked a wave of outrage, prompting the university to launch an inquiry. The videos, recorded in the Psychology Department, show the professor dressed as a bride and performing traditional Hindu Bengali wedding rituals, including sindoor daan and mala bodol, with a first-year student.
While the videos quickly spread across social media, igniting criticism, the professor defended her actions, claiming that the incident was part of a psycho-drama demonstration intended for her class, not a real marriage. According to her, the footage was initially meant for internal documentation and was “leaked” to discredit the department.
In response to the controversy, the university formed a three-member inquiry panel to investigate the matter, and the professor was asked to go on leave until the probe is completed. The inquiry is being conducted by a committee of female faculty members from other departments. MAKAUT’s officiating vice-chancellor, Tapas Chakraborty, stated that the professor clarified that the act was an academic demonstration with no improper conduct.
The incident has raised questions about academic boundaries and the appropriateness of such demonstrations in university settings.
