Kolkata: The health department of the state government has issued a warning to the animal husbandry department, emphasizing the potential risks associated with the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in Chicken and Poultry products. The letter underscores the possibility of the development of multidrug-resistant bacteria in humans who consume such poultry, posing a significant threat to public health.

Senior physicians in the city have lauded the timely and crucial nature of this communication. Over recent years, humans have experienced increased resistance to more than 20 antibiotics, leading to bacterial infections emerging as a major health concern and a cause of death in hospitals. Experts attribute this rise in antibiotic resistance primarily to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics.

Regular consumption of chicken treated with antibiotics is identified as a potential avenue for individuals to inadvertently introduce antibiotics into their systems. A study conducted by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE) revealed residues of antibiotics in the liver, muscle, and kidney tissues of chicken samples. The researchers specifically looked for traces of six antibiotics commonly used in poultry, detecting significant traces of five. The study also reviewed hospital surveys spanning 11 years, highlighting very high resistance against ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, and tetracyclines—antibiotics found in the chicken samples.

The report by CSE emphasizes the growing challenge in treating diseases such as sepsis, pneumonia, and tuberculosis (TB) with fluoroquinolones, as microbes are becoming increasingly resistant to these antibiotics. The issue underscores the importance of addressing antibiotic use in poultry to mitigate the risks of antibiotic resistance in humans.
