New Delhi: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to conserve fuel, reduce unnecessary imports and strengthen self-reliance amid growing tensions in West Asia, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a nationwide public awareness initiative titled ‘Mera Bharat – Mera Yogdan’ (My Country – My Contribution).

Under the campaign, BJP national president Narendra Modi and party leader Nitin Nabin have issued detailed guidelines to party workers and state units, urging them to promote fuel conservation, reduced foreign expenditure and support for local products and natural farming.

The initiative comes at a time when global geopolitical tensions, especially in West Asia, have raised concerns over fuel prices, energy security and pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves.

Campaign focuses on fuel and energy conservation

According to the communication sent to BJP state units, one of the main objectives of the campaign is to reduce the consumption of petrol, diesel and cooking gas across the country.

Party workers have been instructed to encourage practical steps such as carpooling, increased use of metro rail and public transport systems, and greater adoption of electric vehicles.

The guidelines also ask party leaders and workers to minimise physical travel by conducting online conferences and virtual meetings wherever possible.

To reduce fuel consumption during political events, BJP units have been advised to restrict vehicle convoys and limit welcome gatherings and receptions to only four or five people.

The campaign further proposes that individuals voluntarily commit to using only public transport at least one day every week and, wherever possible, work from home for one or two days weekly.

In addition, BJP offices across the country have reportedly been directed to aim for a 50 per cent reduction in fuel usage and overall energy consumption.

Public awareness drives planned across states

State BJP units have been tasked with taking the campaign to the grassroots level by spreading awareness through district, mandal and booth-level workers.

Party leaders are expected to engage with social organisations, educational institutions and commercial establishments to encourage reduced fuel and electricity consumption.

The campaign also seeks to educate the public on the broader economic impact of excessive fuel imports and foreign expenditure.

According to the party communication, saving energy and reducing unnecessary imports are being projected as national responsibilities linked to economic stability and self-reliance.

Push for ‘Vocal for Local’ and reduced imports

Apart from fuel conservation, the BJP campaign strongly promotes the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, encouraging citizens to buy Indian-made products and support domestic industries.

The guidelines call for continuous promotion of the Swadeshi Swavalamban Abhiyan, or Indigenous Self-Reliance Campaign, in line with the Prime Minister’s larger vision of an आत्मनिर्भर भारत (Self-Reliant India).

One of the major appeals made under the initiative is to avoid purchasing gold jewellery for one year in order to reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

Citizens have also been encouraged to postpone unnecessary foreign travel and instead promote domestic tourism within India.

Party leaders believe that reducing imports of gold and limiting overseas spending can help conserve valuable foreign exchange during a period of global economic uncertainty.

Natural and organic farming encouraged

The BJP campaign also includes an agricultural component focused on promoting natural and organic farming practices.

State units have been directed to create awareness among farmers and rural communities regarding the reduced use of chemical fertilisers and sustainable agricultural methods.

The campaign aims for a 50 per cent reduction in chemical fertiliser usage and encourages farmers to gradually shift towards organic alternatives.

The move is being linked to environmental sustainability, reduced import dependence and long-term agricultural health.

Political observers note that the inclusion of farming and local production reflects the government’s broader attempt to combine economic nationalism with environmental and rural development goals.

Campaign linked to global tensions and energy concerns

The BJP’s outreach initiative comes amid rising concerns over global energy prices and instability in West Asia, a region critical to India’s crude oil imports.

Prime Minister Modi had earlier appealed to citizens to save petrol, diesel and gas, avoid unnecessary expenditure on imported luxury items and support locally manufactured goods.

The party communication states that “saving the country’s wealth and strengthening foreign exchange reserves” is essential for building a stronger and self-reliant India.

Political analysts say the campaign is aimed not only at promoting economic discipline but also at preparing the public for possible global economic disruptions linked to international conflicts and rising commodity prices.

The BJP has instructed all state units to formulate implementation plans, disseminate the guidelines rapidly to grassroots workers and periodically review the progress of the campaign.

Conclusion

The ‘Mera Bharat – Mera Yogdan’ campaign represents the BJP’s attempt to convert national economic concerns into a public participation movement. By encouraging fuel conservation, reduced foreign spending, support for Indian products and sustainable farming, the party hopes to create wider awareness about economic self-reliance during a period of global uncertainty.

Whether the campaign translates into measurable behavioural changes among citizens remains to be seen, but it has already sparked discussion around responsible consumption, energy savings and economic nationalism.
