New Delhi: The INDIA bloc is set to hold a crucial meeting on June 8 as opposition parties come together to discuss their strategy against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central government following the recent Assembly elections. While leaders from more than 20 opposition parties are expected to participate, one notable absentee will be Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The absence of TVK has drawn attention because the party recently emerged as a major political force in Tamil Nadu and currently enjoys the support of the Congress and several INDIA bloc constituents in the state. However, despite being a political ally of Congress in Tamil Nadu, TVK is neither a formal member of the INDIA alliance nor eligible to attend the meeting under the bloc’s current framework.
INDIA bloc gears up for key strategy meeting
The opposition alliance, formed to challenge the BJP at the national level, is holding its first major meeting after Assembly election results in four states and one Union Territory.
According to Congress leaders, around 23 parties are expected to participate in the gathering at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. Parties likely to attend include Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party (SP), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Indian Union Muslim League, National Conference, Nationalist Congress Party, Shiv Sena, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Rashtriya Janata Dal and several others.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has maintained that the alliance remains united despite some parties choosing not to attend due to their own political considerations.
The meeting is expected to focus on issues including governance, inflation, employment, constitutional concerns and future political coordination among opposition parties.
Why TVK is not attending
Although TVK has become an important political player in Tamil Nadu, the party will not be present at the INDIA bloc meeting for two primary reasons.
Firstly, according to Congress sources, invitations for the meeting have been limited to parties that currently have representation in either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha. Since TVK does not yet have any Members of Parliament, it does not qualify under this criterion.
The party entered electoral politics only recently and contested its maiden Assembly election in Tamil Nadu. Despite a strong debut performance that reportedly saw it emerge as the single largest party, TVK currently lacks parliamentary representation at the national level.
Secondly, TVK is not formally a member of the INDIA bloc. While it enjoys political support from Congress and certain opposition parties within Tamil Nadu, the party has not officially joined the opposition alliance at the national level.
As a result, despite its growing influence and alliance with Congress in the state, TVK remains outside the INDIA bloc’s decision-making structure for now.
TVK’s rise in Tamil Nadu politics
TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, made a significant impact during its first electoral contest in Tamil Nadu.
Following the Assembly elections, the party secured support from Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League and Left parties including CPI and CPI(M), enabling it to form the government.
The development dramatically altered Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and elevated Vijay from a newcomer to one of the state’s most influential political figures.
The party’s rapid rise has inevitably sparked speculation about its future role in national opposition politics and whether it may eventually join the INDIA alliance.
DMK also skips the meeting
TVK is not the only Tamil Nadu-based party missing from the gathering. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), one of the founding pillars of the INDIA bloc, has also decided to stay away from the meeting.
The decision follows tensions between DMK and Congress after the latter backed Vijay’s TVK following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Congress had contested the elections as part of the DMK-led alliance and secured five seats. However, its subsequent support for TVK’s government reportedly strained relations between the two parties.
In a communication explaining its decision, DMK stated that although it would not attend the meeting, it would continue supporting issues related to national welfare and remain aligned with broader opposition concerns.
The absence of such a key ally highlights the growing challenges facing the opposition alliance as it attempts to maintain unity amid regional political rivalries.
Mamata Banerjee among leaders attending
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has confirmed her participation in the meeting and travelled to New Delhi ahead of the gathering.
The Trinamool Congress leader’s attendance comes after a difficult electoral period for her party in West Bengal. Despite recent political setbacks and internal challenges, the TMC remains a significant component of the INDIA bloc.
Several other senior opposition leaders are also expected to attend, underscoring the importance of the meeting in shaping the alliance’s future strategy.
Challenges ahead for the opposition alliance
While Congress leaders continue to insist that the INDIA bloc remains united in its opposition to the BJP, recent developments suggest that managing relationships among alliance partners may prove increasingly difficult.
Regional political interests, leadership ambitions and shifting electoral equations have created friction among some member parties. The absence of both DMK and TVK from the meeting reflects the complex political realities confronting the opposition alliance.
The outcome of the gathering could play an important role in determining whether the bloc can maintain cohesion ahead of future electoral battles or whether internal disagreements will continue to challenge its effectiveness.
Conclusion
Vijay’s TVK will not attend the INDIA bloc meeting primarily because it does not have parliamentary representation and is not yet a formal member of the alliance. While the party remains a Congress ally in Tamil Nadu, its exclusion highlights the distinction between state-level political partnerships and national opposition coordination. As the INDIA bloc seeks to strengthen its strategy against the BJP, questions surrounding alliance unity and future expansion are likely to remain central to the political conversation.
