A 67-year-old woman who was violently attacked during a burglary attempt at her home in Paramathi Velur, Namakkal district, late Saturday night, succumbed to her injuries early Sunday.
The victim, Samiatthal, a widow, lived alone on a farmland and was sleeping outside her house when an unidentified intruder woke her around midnight. The assailant reportedly demanded money and jewellery, but when Samiatthal raised an alarm, the attacker stabbed her in the face and fled the scene in panic.
Her screams drew the attention of nearby residents, who rushed to help and took her to Tiruchengode Government Hospital. Later, she was shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore due to the severity of her injuries.
Despite efforts to save her, Samiatthal died of her injuries early Sunday morning. Her relatives, alerted from nearby villages, gathered as news of the assault spread.
Police have launched an investigation and are trying to identify the attacker. The brutal incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns over the safety of elderly residents living alone in rural areas.
