New Delhi: Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) President Kamal Haasan has said that he is willing to ally with the Congress party, but on one condition… they will have to break off ties with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as the MNM will not ally with any “tainted” party.
This is the first time that the actor-turned-politician, who launched his own political party earlier this year, has openly spoken out against the DMK. While he has been openly critical of the state and central governments, this is the first time that he has named the party. The DMK had ignored Haasan earlier this year, when he had proposed an all-party meeting over the Cauvery issue.
In an interview with a TV channel, he said that he would readily join the Congress party for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections if the DMK-Congress alliance broke. “I have to speak with the Congress to ensure that our alliance would benefit the people of Tamil Nadu,” he added.
Haasan had met AICC President Rahul Gandhi earlier in June to discuss the political condition of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, his statement of a possible alliance with the Congress comes as no surprise to anyone.
Stating that his MNM was against corruption, he assured that his party would work to “dethrone” the DMK and AIADMK as they were “corrupt.”
