In a shocking act of domestic violence, a 35-year-old woman from Krishnapuram village was taken into custody on Friday for allegedly dousing her husband with scalding oil while he was asleep, following a prolonged marital conflict.
The victim, Balasubramanian (42), an auto driver by profession, suffered severe burn injuries and is currently undergoing intensive treatment at the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. His condition remains critical, according to hospital sources.
The couple, married for 17 years and parents to four children, had reportedly been at odds for quite some time. Around 25 days ago, a heated altercation led Muthulakshmi to walk out of their home. She subsequently filed a grievance against her husband at the All Women Police Station in Tirunelveli.
Officials attempted to mediate between the estranged couple and arranged for reconciliation meetings. Following these sessions, Muthulakshmi moved back into the family residence just four days prior to the incident.
Despite returning, tensions reportedly persisted within the household. In the early hours of Friday, while Balasubramanian lay asleep, Muthulakshmi is said to have poured boiling oil on him. Sources revealed that she also allegedly threatened to end his life.
Acting on the husband’s formal complaint, Sivanthipatti police registered a case under charges of domestic assault and criminal intimidation. Muthulakshmi was subsequently arrested and remanded to judicial custody pending further investigation.
The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns over unresolved domestic disputes turning violent.
