A 37-year-old woman from Kerala’s Thrissur district died on Friday following complications arising from a home delivery conducted without medical supervision, raising serious concerns over maternal healthcare awareness and safety.
The deceased, Muhseena, had delivered her seventh child at her residence in Edakazhiyur, Chavakkad, on January 6. The newborn reportedly died three days later due to lack of proper medical care.
Health complications after unsupervised delivery
According to officials, Muhseena had been suffering from severe complications since childbirth. She was eventually admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Thrissur, where she succumbed during treatment.
Doctors stated that she was brought in with sepsis and multiple organ failure. Medical experts emphasised that the first two months post-delivery are critical, and any death during this period is categorised as maternal death, warranting detailed investigation.
Allegations against husband and treatment practices
Relatives have alleged that Muhseena’s husband, an acupuncturist, insisted on conducting all deliveries at home without medical consultation. It was reported that she did not undergo antenatal check-ups or seek professional medical advice during any of her pregnancies.
They further claimed that the woman’s condition had deteriorated significantly, both physically and mentally, before she sought help. Concerns have also been raised over alternative treatments reportedly administered during her illness.
However, a family member of the husband has denied all allegations.
Police case and investigation underway
The Chavakkad police have registered a case of unnatural death, and officials confirmed that further action will be taken based on the postmortem report. Authorities have also indicated that a detailed probe will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death and any possible negligence.
Relatives are expected to file a formal complaint with senior police officials, seeking accountability.

The incident has highlighted the critical importance of institutional deliveries, antenatal care, and timely medical intervention. Health experts warn that avoiding professional care during pregnancy and childbirth can lead to life-threatening complications.
