A tragic incident in Odisha has sparked concern over rising human-wildlife conflict after a 58-year-old woman reportedly died following an attack by a monkey in her village.
Woman pushed from rooftop by monkey
The deceased, identified as Sulochana Das, was at her home in Rajanagar village under Athagarh police limits when the incident occurred on Sunday. She had reportedly gone to the rooftop to dry cow dung cakes when a monkey suddenly appeared.
According to sources, the animal allegedly pushed her with force, causing her to fall from the rooftop. The fall resulted in critical injuries.
Family members immediately rushed her to the Athagarh sub-divisional hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Family alleges repeated attacks ignored
Following the incident, the victim’s son, Pradip, lodged a complaint blaming forest authorities for failing to address the growing monkey menace in the area.
He claimed that the same monkey had reportedly injured more than 20 people in the village and surrounding localities over the past month. Despite repeated incidents, no effective action had been taken, he alleged.
The family has called for accountability, stating that timely intervention could have prevented the tragedy.
Police register case, probe underway
Athagarh police have registered an unnatural death case and initiated an investigation into the incident. Officials stated that further inquiry is ongoing to ascertain all circumstances surrounding the death.
Rising concern over human-animal conflict
The incident highlights the increasing instances of human-animal conflict in residential areas, particularly involving monkeys in several parts of India. Experts have often pointed to habitat disruption and food scarcity as contributing factors.
