A 49-year-old woman was injured after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs in the Prem Nagar area on Monday evening, triggering renewed concerns over rising dog menace in residential localities.
Neelam Middha, a resident of Shakti Nagar, had gone to visit her brother-in-law’s house around 4:45 pm when the incident occurred.
Slipped on ramp, dogs turned aggressive
According to family members, two dogs were sleeping on the ramp outside the main gate. As Neelam carefully opened the gate, her foot slipped, startling the animals. The grocery bag in her hand reportedly brushed against them, causing the dogs to become agitated.
The dogs pulled at the bag, leading her to lose balance and fall onto the road. Within moments, four to five other stray dogs from the street gathered and attacked her, biting her hands and feet.
Hearing her screams, family members rushed outside. A scooter rider who entered the street at the same time helped scare the dogs away.
Treated at hospital, anti-rabies shots given
Neelam was immediately taken to the district hospital, where doctors treated deep wounds on her left hand and foot. She was administered anti-rabies injections and given primary medical care.
Local residents have expressed concern over the increasing number of stray dogs in Prem Nagar. Former councillor Kamal Narang stated that such attacks are becoming frequent and demanded urgent intervention from the administration.
Residents say the problem has escalated in recent months, posing risks to children, elderly people and visitors alike. Authorities are yet to announce specific measures to address the issue.
