A woman from Parappanangadi, who had been listed as a close contact of a recent Nipah virus victim, died on Wednesday while under treatment at a private hospital in Kottakkal. The woman had reportedly been in contact with an 18-year-old girl from Mankada who recently succumbed to the deadly virus.

Although the deceased woman did not exhibit typical Nipah symptoms, authorities are taking no chances. Her samples have been sent for lab testing to confirm or rule out any possible Nipah link. In accordance with established Nipah safety protocols, her body will not be cremated until the test results are confirmed.

The health department has reiterated public safety guidelines to minimize infection risk. These include:

  • Frequent handwashing with soap and water, particularly after handling animals or waste.

  • Avoiding consumption of fallen or partially eaten fruits and vegetables.

  • Ensuring all food and drinking water is properly covered.

  • Using personal protective equipment while caring for the sick.

  • Covering nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing.

  • Avoiding touching one’s face and maintaining hygiene vigilance.

  • Officials have urged the public not to panic but to remain alert and follow these precautionary measures.
