Mumbai: A 44-year-old woman hailing from an affluent family opted to go to jail for seven days over paying a penalty for travelling without ticket. She based her argument on why the authorities are not acting tough on liquor baron Vijay Mallya and are harassing common people.

Premlatha Bhansali is a resident of plush Bhuleshwar area in South Mumbai. She was caught travelling without ticket on Sunday at Mahalakshmi station of suburban network.

When the ticket chequer demanded her to pay the ticket or penalty of Rs 260, she insisted that first Mallya be arrested and romping dues of Rs 9,000 cr be recovered from him.

Even as Railway Police officials tried to persuade the woman to clear the paltry fine and leave, Bhansali argued for over 12 hours, demanding to know why Mallya has been spared and why common people are harassed.

“She was produced in the magistrate’s court today and asked to pay the fine. But she declined and chose to go to jail for seven days,” said Anand Vijay Jha, senior Divisional Security Commissioner of Mumbai division, Western Railway, reports New Indian Express.

The police even summoned her husband Ramesh Bhansali but she refused to pay the fine and insisted on serving the seven-day jail term, the officer said.
