Chennai: A video of a woman rescuing an abandoned newborn baby from a stormwater drain, has gone viral on social media.
The newborn, a boy, was evidently abandoned in the stormwater drain and was rescued by Geetha on August 15 morning. Geetha is reported to have heard the baby’s cries coming from the drain which is when she jumped to its rescue with the help of some passers-by. The child was found with its umbilical tied around its neck.
Geetha promptly informed the police about the matter and the infant was rushed to the Institute of Child Health at Egmore, where it is currently receiving treatment. The child has been named “Suganthiram” meaning “freedom” in Tamil. This name was given to him by Geetha as she found him on Independence Day.
The Tamil Nadu police have opened an investigation into the case.
