A shocking incident in Belgharia, Kolkata, took a dramatic turn when a 27-year-old homemaker, who was initially seen running ablaze on the street claiming her husband and his friends had set her on fire, was revealed to have set the fire herself. Police investigation revealed that the woman, suffering from mental health issues, had auditory hallucinations and often suspected her husband of attempting to harm her.
The woman, a resident of Khardah, had previously attempted suicide multiple times, including a failed attempt to set herself on fire at Khardah station. Following her allegations, her husband was detained by Belgharia police. However, after inconsistencies were found in her statements, police began to suspect that the incident was linked to her mental health struggles. The woman’s parents did not file a complaint against her husband and confirmed her ongoing treatment for mental issues.
The woman, who suffered severe burn injuries, is currently being treated at College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati. Police have recorded her statement after doctors confirmed her recovery. Experts suggest that auditory hallucinations are common in individuals with mental health conditions, leading them to perceive loved ones as adversaries. Psychiatrists noted that, with proper medication and care, such symptoms can be managed.
