A tragic accident unfolded in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, on Monday afternoon when a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the road fatally struck an elderly woman. The victim, identified as Ragini, a daily wage earner, was en route to her workplace when the incident occurred.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the speeding vehicle was heading towards Chennai and collided with Ragini near the Gingee area, throwing her to the roadside with severe impact. Ragini, who reportedly resided near a petrol pump in the vicinity, sustained fatal injuries and succumbed on the spot despite attempts by bystanders to assist.
The Sathyamangalam Police responded swiftly, moving the body to the Gingee Government Hospital where she was declared dead. An investigation has been initiated to trace the offending vehicle and driver. Authorities are relying on viral CCTV footage from a nearby surveillance camera that recorded the incident in detail.
In a related incident caught on camera earlier this year, another fatal crash occurred in Tamil Nadu on February 4. A truck plowed into a two-wheeler and a car waiting at a red signal, causing the bike to go airborne. The impact killed one of the passengers — a husband and wife on their way to a relative’s home.
These back-to-back road tragedies highlight ongoing concerns about reckless driving and the urgent need for stricter traffic law enforcement in the state.
