New Delhi: An unidentified man was seen brandishing a gun and opening fire at protesters participating in an anti-CAA and NRC march at Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi on Thursday, January 30. The scene quickly dissolved into chaos and panic as one university student was injured in the firing, according to a report by NDTV.
Dressed in a black jacket and white trousers, a video of the incident shows the man waving a gun around and shouting “Yeh lo aazadi” (here’s your freedom) at the protesters. He was eventually overpowered by nearby police officers and taken into custody.
Speaking to NDTV, Jamia student Aamna Asif said, “We were sitting near the barricades outside Holy Family Hospital. The man sudden erupted and opened fire… He was definitely not one of us. He was from outside.”
The injured victim has been identified as Shadaab and was taken to AIIMS Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, all traffic near the area has been diverted.
The firing took place days after Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur urged a crowd at an election rally in Delhi to say “goli maaro” – or shoot down traitors.
