A 10-year-old elephant was found dead in Odisha’s Ganjam district with a suspected bullet injury, forest officials said.

The carcass was recovered from Talaganda Nala under the North Ghumusar Forest Division on Sunday. Officials who examined the elephant reportedly noticed injury marks suspected to be caused by gunfire.

The shocking discovery has raised fresh concerns over wildlife protection and illegal hunting activities in forest regions.

Forest officials begin investigation

Teams from the forest department reached the spot soon after the carcass was discovered. Veterinary experts conducted a preliminary examination, and samples have reportedly been collected for detailed analysis.

Authorities said a post-mortem examination would help determine the exact cause of death and confirm whether the elephant was shot.

Wildlife activists express concern

The incident has triggered outrage among wildlife conservationists and environmental groups, who demanded strict action if poaching is confirmed.

Elephants are protected under Indian wildlife laws, and harming them is considered a serious offence.

Focus on human-wildlife conflict

The death has once again highlighted ongoing concerns surrounding human-wildlife conflict and the safety of elephants in forest zones across India.

Officials said surveillance in the region has been intensified, and investigations are underway to identify any individuals involved in the incident.

Further details are awaited following the post-mortem report.
