In a disturbing chain of events, a young man allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday after being unable to cope with the death of his alleged teenage girlfriend in the Hayathnagar area on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
The incident occurred near Brahmanapalli village in Hayathnagar. The deceased youth has been identified as Siddagoni Mahesh, a resident of the same village as the girl.
Youth sets himself on fire
According to police sources, Mahesh allegedly poured petrol over himself and set himself ablaze near Turkayamjal, on the outskirts of Brahmanapalli. He suffered severe burn injuries and died on the spot before help could reach him.
Police were alerted soon after the incident and rushed to the location. The body was later shifted for post-mortem examination as part of the investigation.
Incident follows teenage girl’s death
The youth’s death came just a day after a 17-year-old girl was found hanging in Medipalli village of Yacharam mandal. Following the girl’s death, her relatives lodged a complaint with the Pharma City Police, alleging that Mahesh was responsible for the circumstances that led to her suicide.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and began an investigation into the girl’s death.
Past suicide attempt revealed
During the investigation, police revealed that the youth and the teenage girl were allegedly in a relationship. Officials said the couple had earlier attempted to die by suicide together by consuming pesticide but were rescued in time and survived.
“This earlier incident is also being examined as part of the investigation to understand the sequence of events and the mental state of both individuals,” a police officer said.
Cases registered, probe underway
Police have registered separate cases in connection with both deaths and are probing the exact circumstances that led to the tragic incidents. Statements from family members, friends, and local residents are being recorded.
Authorities said no final conclusions would be drawn until all evidence, including post-mortem reports, is reviewed.
The incidents have shocked residents of the villages and raised concerns about emotional distress among young people and the lack of timely mental health support in rural and semi-urban areas.
If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally or dealing with distress, reaching out to family members, trusted individuals, or mental health professionals can help prevent tragedy.
