KANNUR: Zumba training has been rolled out across primary and secondary schools in Kannur district to promote student well-being and reduce academic stress. The initiative, introduced following a suggestion from the Chief Minister, aims to bring movement and joy into students’ daily routine through engaging group exercise sessions.

Schools were instructed to begin Zumba sessions at the start of the academic year, with teachers briefed during the summer break. However, several schools have faced delays in implementation due to persistent rain disruptions and the absence of clear operational guidelines.

The District Education Office has now asked schools to submit a status report on the program’s progress.

In addition to Zumba, authorities have proposed incorporating games and light exercises to further support the students’ physical and mental health.

While physical education teachers are tasked with leading the sessions, many high schools in the district do not have dedicated PE teachers, affecting the consistent rollout of the program.

Health studies support the initiative, noting that regular physical activity like Zumba boosts the release of endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, and adrenaline, improving mood, energy, and cardiovascular function. This leads to better concentration, memory retention, and longer study endurance.

Zumba also enhances oxytocin production through social bonding, while its neuromuscular benefits help sharpen focus and coordination in young learners.

Despite initial hurdles, the program holds promise as a fun, science-backed approach to supporting students’ academic and emotional growth.
