In a bid to ease Bengaluru’s infamous traffic congestion, Indian Railways has proposed a direct rail link between the city and Kempegowda International Airport. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that, alongside existing metro, road, and suburban rail services, a new train route will soon connect the airport with the metropolis.

However, certain technical hurdles must be overcome before the project can take off. Vaishnaw assured that railway teams are actively working on solutions. He recalled traveling by train from the airport during a prior visit, finding the 40-45 minute ride quite comfortable. Yet, the need for a rail flyover was identified, and officials have now devised a plan to address it.

K-RIDE, a collaborative effort between the state and central governments, is already working on expanding suburban rail networks. Vaishnaw stressed the importance of accelerating metro and suburban rail development, given Bengaluru’s population of 1.5 crore. He urged the state government to appoint a full-time railway technical expert to K-RIDE, warning that progress could stall otherwise.

On the much-discussed circular rail project, the Minister confirmed that plans are now finalized. With seven railway lines already connecting Bengaluru, a circular network is set to enhance urban mobility. He also emphasized that while metro train manufacturing isn’t directly under the railways, ensuring quality transport options for Bengaluru remains a priority.
