India’s Filter Coffee Crowned World’s Best by TasteAtlas
India’s beloved filter coffee has clinched the top spot on TasteAtlas’ list of the ‘Top 62 Coffees in the World’, surpassing global favorites like Café Cubano. This South Indian staple, cherished for its frothy texture and aromatic richness, has finally received international recognition, though some say it’s long overdue.
Coffee connoisseurs like Bengaluru-based Suresh Jayaram see filter coffee as more than a beverage—it’s a cultural icon that embodies hospitality and heritage. Jayaram insists that every element, from the quality of coffee powder to the milk’s temperature, must be perfect for a flawless brew.
While chains like Mavalli Tiffin Room (MTR) and Saravana Bhavan have preserved the authenticity of filter coffee, chef Dhruv Oberoi laments that its international promotion lags behind Western-style drinks like cappuccinos. Despite this, MTR stands out as a brand successfully taking filter coffee global without compromising its essence.
As India celebrates this accolade, filter coffee’s rise reflects a growing confidence in showcasing traditional beverages on the world stage.
