A convict serving a life sentence for killing an on-duty police officer—who had evaded capture for 11 years after escaping from prison—was finally apprehended in Pune, authorities revealed on Thursday.
The arrested fugitive, identified as Ambareesh Ambadasa Natikar, hails from Bhagodi in Chittapur taluk, Kalaburagi. City Police Commissioner Sharanappa S D confirmed his capture.
The crime dates back to 2009, when Natikar fatally assaulted police constable Ashwin Kumar near Banjara Cross after an altercation at J B Complex, Bidapur Colony. In 2011, the District Sessions Court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a ₹50,000 fine.
Following prison clashes, he was transferred to Vijayapura District Central Jail. However, in 2014, while undergoing treatment at a government hospital, he escaped undetected.
A case was registered at Vijayapura Gandhi Chowk Police Station, but Natikar remained elusive for over a decade. Acting on intelligence, a special police team—led by PI Santhosh L Thattepalli and officers Bhima Nayak, Shashikantha, and Channaviresh—tracked him down. Using scientific and technical investigations, they arrested him on February 26 in Pune.
The accused was presented before the court and has been remanded in judicial custody.
