In a landmark decision, Additional District and Sessions Judge, FTSC-I (POCSO), D Vinay sentenced a 24-year-old man, Jumar, to one year of simple imprisonment for persistently stalking and harassing a minor girl. The ruling, delivered just four months after the case was filed on October 15, 2024, marks a significant achievement, being the first case under the BNS sections to secure a conviction for stalking.
Public prosecutor Sahana Devi Boloor, who led the case, underscored the efficiency and importance of this swift verdict. Jumar’s relentless harassment targeted the victim and her family for 15 consecutive days. The minor, feeling threatened and unable to continue her education due to the ongoing harassment, decided to file a complaint with the Venoor police station, with the strong support of her relatives.
After investigating the case, Sub Inspector Shrishail D Muragod presented the chargesheet to the court. Following the thorough legal proceedings, Judge D Vinay, after listening to the arguments of the prosecution, convicted Jumar under Section 78 of BNS and sentenced him to one year in jail. Furthermore, Jumar was fined Rs 10,000. Should he fail to pay the fine, he will face an additional two months of imprisonment.
This judgment sets an important precedent for the fight against stalking and harassment, ensuring swift and fair justice for victims of such crimes.
