Farmers’ associations in Kalaburagi have called for a district-wide bandh on January 22, demanding a special relief package for tur farmers. Addressing the media, Sharanabasappa Mamshetty, president of Pranth Raitha Sangha, urged the government to provide compensation of ₹25,000 per acre to farmers who faced significant crop losses this season.

Of the total six lakh hectares under cultivation in Kalaburagi, crops on nearly two lakh hectares have been entirely destroyed, prompting calls for immediate financial aid to the affected farmers. Mamshetty stressed the need for a special allocation of ₹25 crore to the Tur Board, emphasizing that the Tur Board deserves the same level of support and attention that the Coffee Board receives.

The bandh aims to highlight farmers’ grievances, with the primary focus on securing a fair minimum support price (MSP) for various crops. Farmers believe that these measures are crucial for addressing their ongoing economic struggles and safeguarding their livelihoods.

The associations have appealed to the public to support their protest, which seeks to draw the government’s attention to the plight of the region’s farming community.
